Free UTM Builder for Email Marketing
Most email service providers add their own click-tracking parameters, like mc_cid and mc_eid in Mailchimp, on top of whatever links you send. UTM parameters still need to be added manually to every link since ESP-native tracking generally does not translate into GA4 source and medium data.

Email Marketing tracking gotchas to know before you launch
Your ESP's own tracking parameters are not UTM parameters
Mailchimp's mc_cid and mc_eid, or equivalent parameters in Klaviyo and other platforms, feed that tool's own open and click reports. They do not populate utm_source or utm_campaign in GA4, so both need to coexist on the same link.
utm_content is what makes subject-line and CTA testing measurable
Open rate alone cannot tell you which link inside an email actually drove a click. Give every distinct link, including duplicate CTAs pointing to the same destination, its own utm_content value.
One utm_campaign per send keeps reporting clean
Reusing the same utm_campaign across multiple sends of an evolving newsletter makes it impossible to tell which specific send drove which clicks. Include a date or send identifier in the campaign name instead.
Email Marketing UTM FAQ
Do I need UTM parameters if my ESP already tracks clicks?
Yes. Your email service provider's own click tracking, like Mailchimp's mc_cid parameter, reports inside that platform's dashboard but does not populate source and medium data in GA4 or other external analytics tools.
What utm_medium should email campaigns use?
email is the standard convention across virtually every analytics platform and email service provider.
How do I track which link in an email got clicked?
Give each individual link its own utm_content value, even if several links in the same email point to the same destination URL, such as hero_cta_btn versus footer_link.
Should every newsletter send use the same utm_campaign?
No. Include a date or edition identifier, like weekly_digest_july_22, so each send is reportable on its own rather than blending into one campaign that spans months of sends.
